1961-63:

 

Part time employed by Engelund & Mandrup Andersen, Consulting Engineering Co., Copenhagen. Worked mainly on the design of harbours, but also on the design of thin concrete shell roofs.

 

1961-67:

Part time assistant professor, Hydraulics Laboratory, Danish Engineering Academy, Copenhagen.

 

1963-69:

Founder and owner of H. F. Burcharth, Consulting Engineering Company, Copenhagen. The company, which I ran on a part time basis can be characterized as a small company dealing with a variety of jobs in the civil and structural engineering field, also turn key industrial buildings and container terminals.

 

During the same period advisory engineer for Hostrup - Schultz & Sørensen, Consulting Engineering Company, Copenhagen, (Department for harbour engineering in arctic areas) on part time basis.

 

During the summer periods 1961-67 employed by the Danish Ministry of Greenland as resident civil engineer on harbour construction sites and as head of maritime surveying teams.

 

1967-68:

Senior research grant. Worked at the Hydraulics Laboratory, The Technical University of Denmark, on problems related to statistical turbulence theory. Thesis on energy decay processes in turbulence.

 

1969-74:

Professor, head of Laboratory of Hydrodynamics, Port and Coastal Engineering, Danish Engineering Academy, Aalborg, in which job I planned and started the Hydraulics and Coastal Engineering Laboratory in Aalborg.

 

1974

Aalborg University was founded in 1974. The Danish Engineering Academy was integrated into the university and I became Head of the Department of Civil Engineering.

 

1977-78:

While on sabbatical leave from Aalborg University I spent a year in Great Britain, most of the time on research at the Hydraulics Research Station (HRS), Wallingford.

 

1979-

Professor of Marine Civil Engineering, Hydraulics and Coastal Engineering Laboratory.

Head of the Department of Civil Engineering, Aalborg University until 2002.

Professional experience and interests:

 

In charge of the Hydraulics and Coastal Engineering Laboratory, Aalborg since 1969 and responsible for a very large number of model test projects, including evaluation of environmental conditions (waves, water levels etc.), testing of structures, and investigation of wave disturbance in harbour basins. Advisor on design and construction of breakwaters, coastal protection structures, port structures, port planning, wave disturbance in ports, manoeuver simulations, downtime estimation, world wide. Optimum safety levels and probabilistc design of ports and coastal structures.

In the fields of coastal and offshore engineering my research activities have for the last

·       Time- and frequency domain analysis of waves including wave grouping.

·       Effect of wave grouping on sloping structures.

·       Scale effects in hydraulic models.

·       Wave loads on coastal and offshore structures.
